Recent genetic evidences indicate that there is a Sierra Nevada type that is a unique form of the species found only in the Sierra Nevada. Sierra Nevada species are rarer than the Florida Panther, and rarer than the California Condor. In 1979 it was estimated 1,180 animals between Mt. San Jacinto and the Mexican border.

In March 1998 this animal was listed as an endangered one by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Nowadays the animals still range into Baja California, but their numbers have dwindled to less than three per cent of the estimated 1.5 million of the early 1800's.
